A Radio Interview My Friend (Generously, Though, Perhaps, Foolishly) Invited Me To Do
“The sure sign of an amateur is he has a million plans and they all start tomorrow.”
Deal Hudson, a long-time friend and the first fellow who ever published my writings on film, recently asks me to talk about “Spiritual Films” for his “Church and Culture” show on Ave Maria Radio. I jumped at the opportunity, as you can imagine.
We talked about Henry Poole Is Here, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Ordet, Babette’s Feast, Diary of a Country Priest, and The Sacrifice. We ran out of time at the end, though, so he could only give me two minutes to talk about Tarkovsky’s masterpiece (which I actually had the chance to watch with a group of students this past Saturday). What I was able to say in two minutes was laughable, of course, since I’ve probably got two months (or two years) worth of things I’d like to say about that film. Yeesh.
If he knows what’s good for him, he won’t put a microphone in front of me again. But he’s a very kind fellow, and I have a very long list of films I’d love to talk about, so I suspect we’ll be back at it again in the not-too-distant future. Don’t worry; I’ll keep you posted. Oh, and here’s the audio, so I can show that I’ve actually been doing something, cinephilia-bootstrap-related.
Enjoy!
